Sáčurov – Zemplínska Šírava – Sáčurov is a long but relatively gentle cycling loop through the scenic landscapes of eastern Slovakia, leading towards one of the country’s largest and best-known reservoirs – Zemplínska Šírava. Covering approximately 82 km, the route is ideal for cyclists who enjoy longer trips, open landscapes and relaxed riding without a large number of demanding mountain climbs.
The route starts in Sáčurov and leads through small villages and extensive agricultural areas characteristic of the East Slovak Lowland. The relatively small elevation changes make it possible to maintain a steady pace, while the open countryside offers wide panoramic views and distant hills on the horizon.
The main highlight of the trip is Zemplínska Šírava – a large reservoir surrounded by recreational areas and popular holiday resorts. The view of the vast expanse of water and the surrounding hills gives this part of the journey a completely different character and provides a natural place for a longer break. During the season, the area around the lake offers plenty of opportunities to stop for a meal, a drink or simply relax by the water.
After leaving the Zemplínska Šírava area, the route heads back towards Sáčurov. The return journey through the peaceful countryside of eastern Slovakia once again offers open landscapes, small villages and long sections where cyclists can maintain a comfortable and steady pace.
Despite its relatively gentle elevation profile, the route is demanding mainly because of its distance of more than 80 km. It is very well suited to trekking, gravel and electric bikes, while cyclists using conventional bikes will find it an attractive option for a longer full-day ride. The combination of a substantial distance and a visit to Zemplínska Šírava gives the route a distinctly recreational and sightseeing character.
